How’s the location of Hotel Tierra Maya?
The hotel is located beachside, approximately 2 km from the town of Xcalak. It’s well signed, but if you’re in doubt look for a giant Mayan head painted on the side of the building. If you see him looking stoically down on you, you’re in the right place.
There are a few other properties south of Hotel Tierra Maya (you’ll pass them as you arrive), but with the jungle in between you’ll have no trouble feeling like you’ve got a view of the Caribbean Sea all to yourself. The hotel is located far enough from the beach road that you won’t hear traffic passing by.
What are the rooms like at Hotel Tierra Maya?
The Mayan theme is embraced with gusto at Hotel Tierra Maya, with decorations featuring Mayan warriors, Mayan symbols, and Mayan art. Every room has new ceiling fans and either a balcony or a patio with a beach view.
If you’re staying long term (or love your culinary independence), book the beachfront apartment. The apartment is the largest room available, and the only one with its own kitchen. The beachfront apartment has a balcony looking out from the living room and an additional balcony in the bedroom. Because, you know, you can never have too many beach view balconies. In the beachfront apartment you can even step up to the roof for an expansive view of the area, including the beach and the surrounding jungle.
Hotel Tierra Maya’s luxury suites include a living area and large bedroom, as well as a mini-fridge to keep your snack and beverages cool. Relax on the wooden deck chairs on your balcony with a book from the in-room library or just gaze out at the view of the Caribbean Sea.
In a standard suite you can walk out onto your patio and ease into a wooden deck chair, or continue walking straight out to the beach. The coziest of the three types of accommodation in Hotel Tierra Maya, in a standard suite the bedroom and living area are one.
What’s special about Hotel Tierra Maya?
One of the best things about staying at Tierra Maya is knowing you’ll be taken care of. The manager Eduardo makes sure guests are comfortable and have everything they need to enjoy their stay. This level of service makes Hotel Tierra Maya a good choice for special occasions like anniversaries or honeymoons.
This is a place where you can devote the maximum amount of time possible to relaxing in a hammock, wandering the beach, or kayaking. With an on-site restaurant you don’t need to worry about making food, and the daily cleaning service means you don’t even need to make your bed. Unless you want to make your bed, of course. It’s your vacation.
Hotel Tierra Maya is one of the few accommodations in Xcalak with an on-site restaurant, which has a towering palapa roof, inviting wooden décor, and beach view. The food at the Mayan Grill Restaurant is a highlight of Tierra Maya, especially dinners which includes an appetizer, main course, and dessert.
What’s included when staying at Hotel Tierra Maya?
Breakfast every morning in the Mayan Grill Restaurant is included, as well as in-room purified water. Guests are free to roam the open grassy area between the property and the beach, enjoy a shaded lounger, a hammock, or just plunk themselves right down on the sand.

What’s the story behind Hotel Tierra Maya?
Built in the early 2000’s, Tierra Maya operated for several years before the Mayan Grill Restaurant was built – the new restaurant is much larger (and fancier) than its predecessor.

Eduardo continued managing the hotel and restaurant and making improvements, and today he owns the place. He’s passionate about keeping Hotel Tierra Maya friendly, beautiful, and comfortable for guests.
What’s the best way to reserve Hotel Tierra Maya?
Contact Eduardo to reserve a room at Hotel Tierra Maya or book a fly fishing package. Tierra Maya is closed every September and October, during the low season in Xcalak.
