Celebrating 43 Years of Costa de Cocos in Xcalak, Mexico

We’re happy to celebrate a milestone for one of Xcalak’s most long-term establishments: Costa de Cocos. This mainstay accommodation is commemorating 43 years of hospitality, adventure, and memories.

Recently the founders of Costa de Cocos (Dave & Ilana) posted about the resort’s history and growth on a Facebook Reel. Here’s a quick snip of their post:

“This year, we’re celebrating the 43rd anniversary of Costa de Cocos!

David cleared this little spot – his vision of paradise – and planted this magical place in 1981. We’ve been growing here ever since. Throughout the years, we’ve continued to build (and rebuild after at least three big hurricanes come our way).

We were the very first fly fishing operation in the area and one of the first dive shops. The closest town, Mahahual, was just a sandy village with no concrete buildings.

We’ve seen the area grow, the kids turn to grandparents, and businesses and long-time expat friends come and go. We’ve had the privilege of hosting world-class fly fishers and weary travelers alike. We’ve welcomed many a fishing tour back to the resort in the evening with a cold beer and a ready ear for recaps of wild adventures on the flats.

We have endured the times, good and the bad. If you’ve ever enjoyed a visit to Costa de Cocos, no matter how long ago, we invite you back for a restful stay or an exciting outdoor adventure, your choice. The beer is still cold and the fish are still biting.”

Why Visit Costa de Cocos in 2024?

Convenience

Costa de Cocos is reasonably self-contained, meaning most things you need are available during your stay. Coco’s restaurant (the Reel Inn) is one of the liveliest places in Xcalak. Plus, scuba diving and fly fishing trips launch right from their dock.

Beach Hut Charm

One of the most endearing aspects of Costa de Cocos is the rustic feel. At 43 years old, it’s easy to imagine this as the first tourist accommodation in Xcalak, surrounded by nothing but palm trees. Oh wait, it still is. And, by the way, the units at Cocos’ are palapa-roofed huts with ensuite bathrooms and a charming Mexican décor.
