How’s the location of The Tierra Maya Lodge?
The lodge is located beachside, approximately 2 km from the town of Xcalak. It’s well signed, but if you’re in doubt look for a giant Mayan head painted on the side of the building. If you see him looking stoically down on you, you’re in the right place.
There are a few other properties south of the Tierra Maya Lodge (you’ll pass them as you arrive), but with the jungle in between you’ll have no trouble feeling like you’ve got a view of the Caribbean Sea all to yourself. The hotel is located far enough from the beach road that you won’t hear traffic passing by.
What are the rooms like at The Tierra Maya Lodge?
The Tierra Maya Lodge is brightly colored and decorations feature Mayan warriors, symbols, and art. Every room has new ceiling fans and either a balcony or a patio with a beach view. Rooms are plenty large, with lots of room to spread out.
If you’re staying long term (or love your culinary independence), book the beachfront apartment. The apartment is the largest room available, and the only one with its own kitchen. The beachfront apartment has a balcony looking out from the living room and an additional balcony in the bedroom.
The Tierra Maya Lodge’s luxury suites include a living area and large bedroom, as well as a mini-fridge to keep your snacks and beverages cool. Relax on the wooden deck chairs on your balcony with a book from the in-room library or just gaze out at the view of the Caribbean Sea.
In a standard suite you can walk out onto your patio and ease into a wooden deck chair, or continue walking straight out to the beach. The coziest of the three types of accommodation at the Tierra Maya Lodge, in a standard suite the bedroom and living area are one.
What’s special about The Tierra Maya Lodge?
The Tierra Maya Lodge is set up for serious fly-fishers and anglers. The lodge is centered around catch release fly fishing, and has a long (long, long long) dock that hosts plenty of aquatic life. Tierra Maya is an ideal spot to launch a guided fly-fishing tour with Xflats.
One of the best things about staying at Tierra Maya is knowing you’ll be taken care of. The general manager Eduardo makes sure fly-fishers and their non-fishing guests are comfortable and have everything they need to enjoy their stay.
This is a place where you can devote the maximum amount of time possible to relaxing in a hammock, wandering the beach, or kayaking. With an on-site restaurant (The Fish Bar) you don’t need to worry about making food, and the daily cleaning service means you don’t even need to make your bed. Unless you want to make your bed, of course. It’s your vacation.
What’s included when staying at The Tierra Maya Lodge?
Breakfast every morning at The Fish Bar is included, as well as in-room purified water. Guests are free to roam the open grassy area between the property and the beach, enjoy a shaded lounger, a hammock, or just plunk themselves right down on the sand.
Tierra Maya has several kayaks for guests to use, and the dock is a perfect starting point for snorkeling or swimming when you’re not fishing.
- In-room purified water
- Daily cleaning service
- Plenty of high-pressure, hot water for showers
- High-speed Wi-Fi available
- Small library with English books in every room
- Free kayak and bicycle use for guests
What’s the story behind The Tierra Maya Lodge?
Built in the early 2000’s, The Tierra Maya Lodge operated for several years as Hotel Tierra Maya before owner, Jesse Colten, turned it into a lodge.
Jesse is a fly-fishing guide from Colorado who saw the pristine conditions of Xcalak, and knew that the fantastically-located Tierra Maya would be a great place to start a business.
He opened the lodge, and combined it with The Xflats (a guided fly-fishing service). At Tierra Maya there’s a strong respect for the environment, and a passion for catch & release fly-fishing.
What’s the best way to reserve The Tierra Maya Lodge?
Contact the owner & fly-fishing guide (Jesse Colten) or the general manager (Eduardo) to reserve a fly-fishing package and room at The Tierra Maya Lodge.
