Sad news: XTC Dive Center is closed, and that sucks. For those seeking certified dive experiences, the best “nearby” option is Mahahual, which offers several reputable dive shops.
XTC was a key part of Xcalak’s tourism since the late 1980s. That’s a full decade before the National Reef Park was even established! This pioneering dive shop (originally called Aventuras Xcalak to Chinchorro; get it? X to C) helped kickstart tourism in the area.
Recently, though, XTC Dive Center unexpectedly closed its doors. The business and its associated accommodation, The Flying Cloud, are no longer operating (despite websites still being live at the time of writing this post). The on-site restaurant, the Coral Bar & Grill, is also closed.
The sudden closure of XTC is disappointing to accommodation owners, expats, and dive enthusiasts who have come to cherish XTC as the heart of diving in Xcalak. And is there drama behind the closure? Yes, there sure is. But we’re not a gossip site, so you’ll have to come to here and ask about it locally.
Here’s what avid divers should know. Currently, there are no PADI, NAUI, or SSI-certified dive centers left in Xcalak.
But don’t let this news keep you from enjoying Xcalak’s incredible marine life. Snorkeling the marine park remains one of the best ways to experience its protected reefs, coral formations, and abundant fish. Whether you’re a seasoned snorkeler or new to underwater exploration, there’s no shortage of awe-inspiring encounters in the calm, clear waters around Xcalak.
Good news: Tourism in Xcalak has always been about more than just diving; it’s about a connection to nature and peaceful surroundings. We’re hopeful that a new certified dive operation will emerge in time to welcome divers back to these protected reefs.
